Ao Oni uses a large number of free and stock RPG sound effects and music. The frightening music and ambient breathing heard during the game have become staples of the genre and are signature themes.

This page contains every sound in the game, including slowed down or sped up versions of stock sounds, and even those used that are used in only one version or aren't used at all.

Stock RPG Maker XP sounds[]

Menu Sounds[]

Like a huge amount of games, Ao Oni has a menu that can be accessed by pressing X, Numpad 0, or Esc. All of the sounds are named "system" (example - 002-System02.ogg). The sounds are listed below:

Usage Number Sound
Select 01
Accept/Open menu 02
Cancel/Close menu 03
Unavailable 04
Equip 05
Save 07
Load 08

The "Unavailable" sound is only used when you press the accept button (Enter, C, Spacebar) in the inventory while not having any items at all.

The "Equip" sound was only present in Version 1.1 and Version 3.0, and was actually left in the game unintentionally - there were parts of the menu called Skills, Equip, and Status. These parts of the menu were useless, due to the game not having any battle mechanics. When pressing the accept button (Enter, C, Spacebar) in the Equip menu (despite not having any equippable items), that sound would play.

001-Wind01[]

001-Wind01.ogg is a stock RPG Maker XP sound used in all versions of Ao Oni. This sound constantly plays in the mansion and the basement.

017-Creature01[]

The Oni is often associated with a heavy breathing sound that plays during certain scenes or locations. During chase scenes where the player hides in the closet, the breathing sound is played when the Oni enters the room. In later versions, the breathing sound is looped continuously when the player enters the annex basement. The breathing sound originates from the RPG Maker XP RTP files titled 017-Creature01.ogg.

In all versions of the game, there is a small room before the basement. In Version 1.1 and Version 3.0, the room is dark, and a significantly slowed down version of this sound plays in that room. This is the only place where a slowed down version of 017-Creature01.ogg is used, and it is nowhere to be found in Version 5.2 and Version 6.23.

Normal speed (1.0x)
Sped up (1.5x)

Custom sounds[]

This is a list of sounds that do not come from RPG Maker XP, but instead, are found in the "Audio" (or "BGM") folder.

Chase Theme (horor-b)[]

  1. The chase theme is internally known as horor-b.mid (horor-b.wav in Version 6.23), an instrumental track that plays during the chase sequences with the Oni, Blockman, Squatto, and the Oni's character variants.

In efficient game design, the MIDI engine should be started as the game boots up, but in previous versions of the game it is launched as soon as the music should be playing. On some older computers, this takes a few seconds, resulting in a few seconds of lag and game-freezing every time the Oni is set to appear during random encounters While it chases the Player.

The MIDI file features two instruments, each named "horor-b." A staccato violin plays G5 and G#5 together, while a low vibrato sine wave rises from F1 to C2. The track plays at 89 BPM, and runs for 8 bars, with a one bar rest in the beginning.

This is a sample of the violin used on the song

In all versions, Hiroshi decides to go check what caused this sound, and it is revealed that it was just a plate shattering. When Hiroshi returns to the foyer, everyone is gone.
