The Oni Room in Version 6.23

The Oni room (動物園 dōbutsuen?, lit. "zoo") is an area in Version 3.0 and Version 6.23. In both versions, it is found near the end of the game. It features a number of deformed monsters, similar to the Oni, behind a locked jail cell. With the exception of the Blob Oni, Blockman and hunchback oni, none of the monsters seen in this room chase the player.

The Oni Room in Version 3.0

Appeareances

Between Version 3.0 and Version 6.23, the Oni room switched buildings and appearance.

In Version 3.0, the Oni room can be accessed after you insert both of the metal pieces, which can be found after Mika and Takeshi die. When both pieces are inserted, a staircase will appear, and going up it, a room with the circle puzzle can be found. When it is solved, the entrance to the oni room will appear. The first room of the oni room consists of many onis locked in a cage. It is impossible to enter the cage. The second room is to the left, and it is mostly empty except for the Blob Oni and the entrance key behind it. The Blob Oni is very slow and can be easily outrunned.

In Version 6.23, it is located outside of the mansion, in the basement of the old building. In here, the floor and walls are normal white wood. Unlike version 3.0, it is possible (and you need to) enter the cage. When you get near the door, the Hunchback Oni kindly opens it for you, then proceeds to chase you. The door where you entered the room from no longer opens, however it will open moments before the Hunchback Oni reaches you. Upon returning to the room, all of the onis are gone. You can now safely go and get the blue piece.

The Oni room was absent in Version 1.1 and omitted from Version 5.2. Since the room appears near the end of the game, it is also not present in Version 6.03, which is a demo for Version 6.23.

Onis

The Oni room introduced a number of Onis to the Oni universe. While varying wildly in appearance, all Onis bear some visual elements similar to the main Oni, even if it's just color or eyes. This implies some sort of a connection with the titular villain.

It has been shown that The Oni himself has an ability to transform the protagonist's friends into other Onis with distinct visual elements of him. However no official origin for these freaks has ever been expressly outlined canonically.

Version 3.0 only.

Clock Oni

Enemy clockoni

The Clock Oni.

The Clock Oni resembles a clock with thorns, as if exploding, or a stalactite. It levitates while staying affixed to its position, one of the thorns stretching and shrinking continuously. It seems to be the Satellite Oni looking forwards.

Tall Oni

Enemy Tall

The Tall Oni.

The Tall Oni is a regular Oni, but its sprite is stretched vertically.

Teeth Oni

Capture

The Teeth Oni.

The Teeth Oni looks nearly identical to the original Oni, but it has deadly sharp teeth and both of its eyes wide open. Its appearance is the same as the oni in the ending of Version 5.2.

Satellite Oni

Enemy satellite

The Satellite Oni.

The Satellite Oni has spike-like protrusions from its head and is capable of flight. It floats back and forth without any other movement. The Clock Oni might be a front-facing Satellite Oni.

Version 6.23 only.

Fuwatti/Blockman

Enemy blockman

The Blockman Oni.

The Blockman Oni, is the only monster seen in the Oni room that can be encountered outside of that room during Version 6.23. In parts of the old building in Version 6.23, Blockman can actually appear and chase the player. From then on, Blockman can also appear randomly. This monster has an odd attack pattern; Blockman will sometimes freeze for a second and charge towards the player with twice the speed. It can also replace the regular Oni (during randomly occuring chases) through use of the BLOCKMAN cheat.

Hunchback Oni

Enemy hunchback

The Hunchback Oni.

The Hunchback Oni, mostly resembles the regular Oni, though its back is hunched over and it is bearing menacing teeth, it is also confirmed that Hunchback Oni is Teeth Oni. It opens the gate of the Oni room when Hiroshi approaches it, then proceeds to chase him while in the room and this fact in the remake its almost looks like teeth oni.

Caterpillar Oni

Enemy caterpillar

The Caterpillar Oni.

The Caterpillar Oni is a slow, sluggish monster. It looks like a caterpillar with its head up and has five eyes on each side of its many-legged body.

Deformed Oni

Enemy deformed

The Deformed Oni.

The Deformed Oni resembles the regular Oni, but the sprite itself is completely warped from IbisPaint.

Both versions.

Blob Oni

Enemy blob

The Blob Oni.

The Blob Oni, is irregular. It looks like an amorphous mass with many eyes spread over its body. This Oni can chase the player in Version 3.0, where it is hiding the front door key. However, since it is very slow, it can very easily be tricked and outrun.

Squatto

Enemy squatto

Squatto.

The Squatto, is a large, muscled Oni that can sometimes be seen banging its fists on the ground. In Version 3.0, this Oni kills Mika by crushing her with its fists in this way. Its rhythmic banging wakes Hiroshi from sleeping in the kid's bedroom. Because of its size, it moves rather slowly in comparison to most onis. In the oni room however, it will not chase the player.

Encephalo Oni

Enemy encephalo

The Encephalo Oni.

The Encephalo Oni is sometimes also called the Jellyfish Oni, Octopus Oni, Calmar Oni or O-ging Oni. The sprite for Encephalo Oni is crafted from the upper half of the original Oni's face, and it is jellyfish-like. The Encephalo Oni is shown as one of the biggest Onis in the game, however it will not chase Hiroshi at any time in the game.
